India Protests US Navy Strikes That Killed 3 Indian Mariners

(MENAFN) India's top diplomat formally protested American naval strikes in the Gulf of Oman on Friday, escalating a diplomatic confrontation with Washington over attacks that claimed three Indian lives.

"Spoke to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio this evening," External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar wrote on X, the US social media platform.

"I reiterated India's strong protest at the attacks by the US Navy in the Gulf that killed three Indian mariners. Such lethal actions against commercial shipping are not justified," he added.

New Delhi summoned the senior-most US diplomat in India for the second consecutive week over the strikes, official sources told media. Jason Meeks, charge d'affaires of the US diplomatic mission, was called to the Indian External Affairs Ministry to receive the formal protest.

On Thursday, Indian authorities confirmed at least three nationals perished after US forces struck vessels off Oman's coastline amid the ongoing Strait of Hormuz blockade.

According to US Central Command, American forces this week disabled three commercial tankers — the Guinea-Bissau-flagged M/T Jalveer and Palau-flagged vessels M/T Marivex and M/T Settebello — on grounds they were transporting Iranian oil in violation of existing sanctions.

The diplomatic standoff signals mounting friction between Washington and New Delhi over military operations targeting commercial shipping lanes critical to global trade.
